District 5010 RYLA
Welcome! District 5010 RYLA will be held at Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, AK on
March 27 – March 30, 2008.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary`s is a four-day
leadership-training program for teen leaders who are high school-grade level
sophomores and juniors. RYLA Alumni and Rebound Rotary Exchange students (on
a space available basis) are also welcome to apply. There is no cost to
youth who are selected as the local Rotary Club pays for the RYLA awardees.
RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth as participants
learn about their own qualities/skills as a leader and also the qualities of
effective leaders and effective teams. The RYLA program consists of a
combination of icebreaker, team building, experiential problem solving
activities as well as group discussions and personal reflection.
Participants are introduced to pertinent leadership topics and issues, hear
presentations from Rotary and community leaders, and have opportunities to
apply their emerging leadership skills in a variety of challenging
activities. Other activities intended to make their RYLA experience a
memorable one include a barbeque, recreational activities and the RYLA
dance.
The event is actually co-planned by the RYLA Alumni, teens that attended the
previous years event. The RYLA Alumni make sure that the program is fun and
relevant to their peers. They have innovative ideas that make sure adults do
not talk for too long and that the days are as interactive as possible. They
serve as Alumni Leaders and Facilitators at the event – an opportunity your
teen will have next year. We believe that the large number of teens who want
to be RYLA Alumni is a good indication that we have a good program with the
right balance of fun and skill building.
Teens interested in attending RYLA must submit a completed application
through their local Rotary club no later than February 22, 2007. Applicants
that progress to the next phase can expect to be called for an interview by
the Rotary club within a week or two of February 22. If you are selected as
a RYLA awardee, the club will inform you in the last week of February or the
first week of March and invite the teen and their parent/guardian to attend
an orientation. RYLA awardees must submit a notarized medical release and
power of attorney forms – your local Rotary contact will help find a notary.
The sponsoring Rotary club will submit payment for the registration and
travel and make all applicable travel arrangements for you.
Be sure to read the FAQ page and go over it with your teen. You must arrange
for your teen to be absent from school on Thursday and Friday. If you are a
remote community and need to leave on Wednesday – you would be responsible
for arranging that as well.
